The holiday season is always full of festive events, and if you just wore formal clothes to a black-tie charity event, winter wedding or on New Year’s Eve, you are probably getting ready to send your tuxedo, dinner jacket or cocktail dress to the dry cleaner. While you may not have a valet to look after a special outfit, you want it to be in good shape and ready for the next black-tie event.
Now is the time to freshen up your formalwear before it goes back into hibernation in your closet. If you have a stain on the item it should be dry cleaned. If the item is not clean when you put it back in the closet you are inviting clothes moths or other insects to chomp away and create damage. If you did not get any stains on the outfit, use a good quality clothes brush and give it a gentle but thorough brushing to remove dust and lint. You have made a big investment in your best formal wear and want it to last for more than one season so taking proper care is important.
Once your item has been cleaned make sure to remove it from its plastic bag––whether that is a bag from the dry cleaner or a heavier plastic garment bag. If you leave your tuxedo or dinner jacket in any plastic bag it can create a real problem. Plastic bags are petroleum-based products and give off gases that can actually harm your expensive clothes. Most likely you have had a white shirt turn yellow—plastic bags are often the cause. These bags also trap moisture and don’t allow clothes to breathe. If your formal wear or good suits are stored in plastic bags, the damage is already taking place and over time will shorten the life of your valuable clothing.
